Staff Cuts At State Mental Hospital

April 8, 2008

(AP) About a dozen staffers will be laid off at Western State Hospital as the mental hospital tries to cut $1.1 million in spending as a response to a decline in state revenues.

The hospital in Staunton lost $486,000 as part of an $11.6 million reduction in state funds to for mental hospitals last fall.

Western State's director, Dr. Jack Barber, told staff in an e-mail on Friday that the cuts will primarily affect departments that provide administrative support. The hospital employs 710 workers.

The reductions come as the state mental-health system attempts to fix problems revealed after a mentally ill student killed 32 people and then himself at Virginia Tech last April.
