Virginia Health Commissioner Addresses UVA Nursing School

April 15, 2009

Virginia Health Commissioner Dr. Karen Remley delivered an address Wednesday afternoon for the University of Virginia School of Nursing at McLeod Hall Auditorium.

She spoke about two pressing issues concerning health in the Commonwealth: infant mortality and childhood obesity. Remley discussed what bedside clinicians can do in those cases.

Her speech was part of the annual Catherine Strader McGehee Memorial Lecture. McGehee was a UVA graduate pursuing a p.H.D when she passed away in 1999 from breast cancer.

"She just really, really cared about the health profession. This year's lecture focuses on children. That was her particular area of study and interest," says Sarah Strader-Schaeffer, Catherine McGehee's sister.

The memorial lecture was endowed in 2002, and speakers are selected each year based on personal qualities, such as a passion for promoting health and the well-being of children.
