Focus Group in Charlottesville to Discuss Infant Mortality Rates

May 21, 2009

The Virginia Department of Health is looking to learn more about infant mortality rates, specifically why they're higher in Charlottesville than in other parts of Virginia.

In 2007, ten babies died in the city. Thursday night, health experts are holding a focus group for moms to discuss the importance of pre-natal care. Some are worried about the racial discrepancies in infant mortality rates.

"We know that there is a racial component to infant mortality in Charlottesville as well as in the state and elsewhere," says Galina Boyarinova of the Thomas Jefferson Health Department.

"If your infant mortality rate is high, it generally follows that you have a community that is not doing well in other areas as well," says Karen Waters, of the Quality Community Council in Charlottesville.

The Focus Group runs from 7:00 to 8:30 Thursday (5/21) night at the Westhaven Community Center in Charlottesville.
