The Virginia Department of Health Professions is mailing notifications to 530,000 people whose Social Security numbers may have been accessed after a hacker breached the state's prescription monitoring program in late April 2009.
Notifications also are being sent to 1,400 people who may have provided their Social Security numbers when they registered to use the state's Prescription Monitoring Program.
The DHP says there are more than 35 million prescription records in the PMP database, but only about 530,000 people could be in danger of identity theft.
