Albemarle Co. Students First to Receive Swine Flu Vaccine

October 19, 2009

Albemarle County students at Broadus Wood Elementary School were first in line for the H1N1 Swine Flu vaccine Monday morning.

The Principal of Broadus Wood, Barbara Edwards, says about two-thirds of the student population signed up for the free vaccine Monday morning. She added that school leaders were not surprised by the large turnout.

"It's going really well, really smoothly. [The health department] came totally prepared and our students are doing an excellent job. We feel really good about the numbers," said Principal Edwards.

Nearly 200 of the 290 students enrolled at Broadus Wood made their way down to the make-shift clinic Monday. Once there, students submitted the proper information and in a matter of minutes, they walked out, armed with the Swine Flu vaccine.

While few Broadus Wood students have had flu-like symptoms, Principal Edwards and many parents believe the vaccine is a good way to curb the spread of the virus.

"No parent likes to see their child with a high fever and not feeling well. I think we felt responsible to our children and our friends' children to have it done," said Eliza O'Connell.

Kids at Broadus Wood are not the only Albemarle County students getting the vaccine. The health department is also providing the flu vaccine to students and faculty at Woodbrook, Yancey, and Scottsville elementary schools.
