Sunday marked the 13th annual Celebration of Life for cancer patients and survivors in our area.
According to the American Cancer Society, millions of people across the country are living with cancer or have had cancer.
Thirteen years strong, cancer survivor Karen White takes time on Sunday afternoon to celebrate both her life and lives of others who battle cancer.
"Anyone that is going through cancer and has been a cancer survivor should come and enjoy this time," said White.
McCrea Kudravetz, another survivor said, "It's a wonderful opportunity to see some of the people we saw in serious clinical situations. To see them in a happy, relaxed setting, where we are all having a good time together, being silly."
Kudravetz also said, "I must admit i have never had a manicure in my life, I had a manicure from one of the CATEC students, and she did wonderful job."
Aside from the manicures and massages, participants also received scarves hand knitted by students from The Village School.
"I think its really special to do this because we're helping people and we're helping them feel much happier. If they are having a hard time, I think this helps cheer them up," said Carman Drake, a student from The Village School.
Barbara Palmore, a survivor her self, came up with the idea to make scarves for patients because of the great support system she had while she was undergoing cancer treatment at the hospital.
"I wanted to give back a little bit of that...just all of the love that I've received," said Palmore.
According to the ACS, cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States.
Half of all men and one third of all women in the US will develop cancer during their lifetimes.
