The latest findings reported in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute show the more fat in your diet, the higher your risk of getting breast cancer.
“Woman who had had a higher fat diet, like 40% of their calories came from fat, were 30% more likely to develop breast cancer than women who had a lower fat intake in their diet,” said Dr. Jennifer Harvey with the UVa Breast Care Center.
The official AARP diet and health study followed the diets of over 180,000 women, and though medical experts find the results concerning, they say there is hope.
Dr. Harvey said, “The good news there is that that's modifiable, meaning that if we change our diet we can lower our risk of developing breast cancer.”
She also says if your diet includes about 90 grams of fat a day, you need to be more aware, cut down on the fast food and start eating more healthy foods.
“Having a low-fat diet and eating the good fruits and vegetables, whole grain products, those are important for so many reasons, not just reducing risk of breast cancer,” said Dr. Harvey.
She also says women should watch what they drink.
“Any kind of alcohol, whether its red wine, whiskey or beer, increases the risk of breast cancer,” said Dr. Harvey.
Other than diet, Dr. Harvey says women who exercise regularly can decrease their risk of breast cancer anywhere from 30-50%
She says women who are overweight increase their chance of breast cancer, so cutting fat out of your diet along with exercise is vital.
“The exercise helps you lose weight, the low fat diet helps you lose weight, and having a lower body weight lowers your risk,” said Dr. Harvey.
