A local doctor received national recognition at Saturday night's American Heart Association Gala.
Dr. William Hammill is an associate professor at the University of Virginia and Director of Cardiac and Vascular Services at Martha Jefferson Hospital.
Saturday night, he received a special award because of the volunteer work he does with the American Heart Association.
"For the last eight or 10 years, I've been very involved within our community as well as nationally and internationally with some of the initiatives with the heart," said Dr. Hammill.
He has made his life's passion saving others lives through first aid.
Dr. Hammill said, "In a partnership with the American Red Cross, the Heart Association has done something that we've never done before and said you know we are committed to what's going on nationally and internationally with first aid."
Because of his hard work and volunteer time with the Heart Association, Dr. Hammill was honored with the 2007 William Gitchell Award.
"I was very humbled to receive the award. I do a lot with the Heart Association, and I'm proud of that, and I'm proud that this hospital has allowed me the opportunity to continue one of my passions which is to volunteer," said Dr. Hammill.
He also says heart disease is a really big deal in our country and in our community, and his work won't stop with the presentation of this award.
"As a physician taking care of kids, I'll have several thousands kids that I'll come in contact with through the course of my career with this opportunity we are going to reach out touch the lives of millions of people and that's the exciting opportunity and it's exciting to think that we might make a difference globally as we look to some of these initiatives," said Dr. Hammill.
