The Republican speaker of Virginia's House of Delegates and its chief budget writer are pressuring Democrats senators to oppose the Senate health reform bill.
Speaker Bill Howell and Appropriations Committee Chairman Lacey Putney say the bill now before the Senate would cost Virginia $920 million from 2017 to 2019. They made the remarks in a letter to Sens. Jim Webb and Mark Warner.
Howell and Putney say that's the price tag for expanding eligibility for Medicaid to include more people. And they note current revenue shortfalls that are Virginia's worst in modern times.
The conservative pair also say the measure is unpopular in Virginia and ask them to "urge caution among their colleagues and oppose the current bill."
