Breast Imaging Group Recommends Mammograms Start at Age 40

January 5, 2010

Mammograms should start at age 40 for most women and by age 30 for high-risk women.

The new recommendations are issued by a breast imaging group, and they contradict government guidelines released in November that suggest screenings begin at age 50.

Researchers from the latest report say the large decrease in breast cancer deaths is due to early detection, which is why they recommend earlier mammograms.
