West Nile Virus Found in Virginia

July 12, 2007

Health officials in the Commonwealth are raising concern after the first reported case of the west Nile virus turned up in Northern Virginia.

A 72-year-old man from Springfield is said to have been diagnosed with the mosquito-borne disease.

Health officials say the virus has arrived in Virginia earlier than usual this year.

They also believe this recent case is a testament to the fact that this virus is still a major threat--especially with the elderly.

"Because of the earliness this really brings to bare the fact that we have to really ramp up our efforts to make sure that people understand that prevention is the key to trying to deal with this potential disease," said Roy Crewz, with the Virginia Department of Health.
