It's required by law that all 6th-grade students must have a T-DAP booster shot before they attend school later on this month.
Officials say you must be able to show written proof of getting the T-DAP booster or you're child won't be allowed to attend school.
"It protects these children against whooping cough and it's the first vaccine that's available for children over age seven. So it keeps them from getting the disease themselves and also passing it along," said Alice Sorum with the Health Department.
Shots are given through you family doctor, or for free at the Virginia Department of Health on Mondays and Thursdays.
