Martha Jefferson Hospital currently has seven operating rooms.
When the new hospital opens its doors in 2011, it will feature eight operating rooms that are nearly double the size of their current ones.
But it's what you can't see in the operating rooms that are still under construction that make them special. They are wired to eventually have all the information a surgical team needs at their fingertips with a touchscreen.
"Right now we're not quite at the point where we think it's where we need it to be, so we are prepping for it in the future," said Greg Mika, the manager of clinical engineering. "We just didn't like where it was right now. so, we'll be able to retrofit to that in the future."
The staff says when it's all done, the new operating rooms will not only make sure you get the most cutting edge care possible but, that it will also keep the patient at the heart of what goes on.
