UVa Volunteers Hit the Road on Mobile Medical Clinic

July 21, 2010

From the biggest medical equipment to everyday items, University of Virginia nurses packed a giant truck to the brim Wednesday morning as they prepared to hit the road and take part in one of the largest free medical clinics in Virginia.

More than 200 volunteers will be traveling to Wise County in southwestern Virginia to take part in a remote area medical clinic, which will transform a fairground into a make-shift hospital.

"There's a huge need for help, so I'm really excited to be able to offer what I can," said UVa. nursing student Julia Smith.

Volunteers, like University nursing and medical students, will help give uninsured patients the screenings, tests and other care they need... for free.

"I'm so happy that we can give something to these people. A lot of them don't have any healthcare the whole year," said Smith.

The remote clinic begins on Friday, July 23 and will offer dental, medical and vision care on a first-come-first-serve basis. Last year, more than 2,700 people were treated.
