When you think of hospital food, you probably are left with a bad taste in your mouth. However, when the new Martha Jefferson Hospital opens its doors in August 2011, you may rethink that.
"We have an action station where stir-fry will be made right in front of customers, a really nice wooden hearth pizza oven and we've just been able to incorporate a lot more healthier items, like local produce," said Catherine Boucher, of Food and Nutrition Services.
The new kitchen and dining facility will boast world-class views and hospital food that aims to be just as spectacular.
Officials say the new space and food variety is not just about keeping staff and patients happy, but it's also about keeping them healthy. People who choose the healthiest menu items will get a discount.
"Part of our mission statement is not only do we take care of sick people, but we're also into the business of trying to keep them well," said Susan Cabell, vice president of human resources.
Families who have loved ones in the hospital will have a wide variety of grab-and-go options, all designed to make it easy to make healthy choices.
Ultimately, Martha Jefferson Hospital wants to do away with the notion that hospital food is, well... hospital food.
