Nearly 250 University of Virginia Health System volunteers are packed and ready to head southwest to create a scaled-down, mobile hospital.

Tractor trailers and personal vehicles loaded with medical supplies will head 300 miles southwest to Wise County to transform the Virginia-Kentucky Fairgrounds into a Remote Area Medical (RAM) clinic. Thousands of Virginians are expected to seek the free medical, dental and vision care offered at the mini-mobile hospital.

Services available include emergency care, mammograms, heart screenings, ultrasounds, chest X-rays, blood and urine tests, colon cancer screening, neurosurgery consultations, bone density testing, mole removal, diabetes management and access via telemedicine to other specialists.

Audrey Snyder says the weekend clinic is just one of many things the UVA Health System does to help the under-served population in southwest Virginia.

"We have some specialty clinics that occur every quarter and we work with the health wagon in southwest Virginia to try and help them meet the needs of the population that lives there that may be under-served," she said.

Patients will be seen in tents and barns with temporary partitions put up by medical volunteers. Primary care services and patient education are also major components of the clinic.

The RAM clinic opens at 6am Friday, July 22 and runs through Sunday, July 24.
