National Alzheimer's Plan Discussed Locally

August 25, 2011

The fight to end Alzheimer's is on and many Central Virginia residents pitched in on Thursday.

The Central and Western Virginia Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association held a public input session at Our Lady of Peace Church in Albemarle County to hear views and perspectives on what a National Alzheimer's Plan should include.

Community leaders, health care providers, family members and those living with the debilitating disease gathered to discuss the creation of a national plan that will address the "rapidly escalating Alzheimer's crisis and coordinate federal government efforts".

Plans discussed at Thursday's forum will be presented to officials from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

"Alzheimer's impacts everyone, so we really want to be able to include in our report to the Department of Health and Human Services what are those issues, what are those needs, what are those programs that need to be right here in Charlottesville and Central Virginia," said Sue Friedman, President & CEO of the Central and Western Virginia Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

Thousands of similar brainstorming sessions are taking place across the country this month.
