The Virginia Department of Health is launching an initiative to control high blood pressure.
State Health Commissioner Dr. Karen Remley says the department is challenging residents to have 1 million blood pressures taken during May as a way to highlight of controlling hypertension in Virginia. This initiative is in conjunction with American Stroke Month and National Blood Pressure Education Month.
The challenge urges organizations, healthcare providers and individuals to take blood pressures for both screening and control purposes.
Dr. Remley noted that in spite of the good news brought about through the hard work and commitment of providers, volunteers and our health districts, data show this downward trend in heart attack and stroke deaths may be leveling off.
It's all part of Million Hearts Virginia, which is in combination with a national movement aimed at saving 1 million lives from heart attack and stroke over five years.
