Researcher Dr. Bankole A. Johnson of the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Virginia Health System has created a drug called topiramate to help methamphetamine addicts.
"This is medication that changes a specific brand chemical called dopamine and it makes it less potent in the brain," said Dr. Johnson.
Dr. Johnson says the use of methamphetamine is a huge problem in Virginia, especially in rural areas. Dr. Johnson says he hopes the medicine will give patients a sense of hope. He says if people would like to participate in clinical trials they are welcome to.
