UVa Health System Volunteers Help With Free Medical Clinic

July 18, 2012

Two truckloads full of medical supplies and hundreds of volunteers from UVa are headed to southwestern Virginia to help out with a free health clinic.

Volunteers with the UVa Health System are loaded up and heading to Wise County for the three day clinic called the Remote Area Medical Clinic (RAM).

Healthcare providers will be offering free medical, dental, and eye care to over 1,000 patients.

"From an economic and personal standpoint, it makes a lot more sense to give free, preventative medicine, making sure people's diabetes and hypertension are treated early. That saves money down the road when they have bigger problems like heart attacks and strokes," said Brett Castrodale, UVa medical student.

"Every patient that you work with is different. Each one has different needs, but every patient is grateful that people are willing to come and provide care, especially in the heat," said Audrey Snyder, UVa nurse coordinator.

Nearly 250 volunteers from UVa are making the trip. The three day clinic operates on a first-come, first-serve basis starting on Friday.
