From what sounds like a normal cough to a reminder about cleanliness, this week we're checking in with Martha Jefferson Doctor Kathy Smyth at Palmyra Medical Associates.

Dr. Smyth says Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is what's going around Central Virginia. RSV is a virus that causes respiratory tract infections. It infects the lungs and breathing passages and is most commonly picked up by infants.

Symptoms include a runny nose, cough, fever and wheezing. Most otherwise healthy people recover from RSV infection in 10 to 14 days. However, infection can be severe in certain infants, young children and older adults.

RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in children under 1 year of age in the United States.

Dr. Smyth recommends drinking plenty of fluids and seeing a doctor if you notice any trouble breathing. She advises keeping a close eye on the symptoms because they could land you in the hospital.

With allergy season here Dr. Smyth is encouraging everyone to disinfect surfaces, wash your hands regularly and make sure you and your family are up to date on all shots.
