From a stomach bug to an important reminder about check-ups, this week we're checking in with Martha Jefferson Doctor Phyllis Montellese at Spring Creek Family Medicine in Zion Crossroads.
Gastroenteritis is what's going around. Also known as gastric flu, stomach flu or stomach virus, Gastroenteritis is inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, involving both the stomach and the small intestine.
It can be transferred by contact with contaminated food and water. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fever, chills and diarrhea. The virus usually lasts about 12 to 36 hours.
Dr. Montellese recommends taking nothing by mouth until vomiting has stopped. Then she suggests progressing your diet slowly.
Also, with spring sports season here, Dr. Montellese is encouraging parents to fill out the history forms on their childcare’s sports physicals and not leave it to them. She says it's too important to not be completely accurate.
