What's Going Around - Hip Fractures

September 5, 2011

You've probably heard the advice to drink lots of milk as a kid to strengthen your bones. Doctors say it can prevent a serious problem later in life.

Doctor John Edwards from Martha Jefferson Hospital says he's seeing an increase in the number of hip fractures in Central Virginia. Hip fractures are most common in people with Osteoporosis.

Symptoms include a sharp pain in the hip after a fall or some kind of accident. The condition is not just limited to the elderly; people involved in serious car crashes can also suffer from a hip fracture.

The best treatment method is surgery.

There are things you do early in life to prevent a hip fracture as you get older. Doctors recommend drinking milk as a kid. Doctors also suggest doing 20 minutes of weight bearing exercise three times a week.

Doctor Edwards also has a reminder for people that rugs, cords and furniture can lead to a fall. If you're having guests over for the holidays, especially elderly relatives, make sure your home is clear of dangers that could result in a fall.
