In this week's edition of What's Going Around, we talked to Dr. David Duani of Greene Family Medicine. He says burns are what to watch out for this week.
While you will likely know if you have burned yourself, Dr. Duani says symptoms include redness, pain and blisters at the site of contact. Minor burns only involve small areas of the skin while joint burns are more severe and require medical attention. Likewise, all face burns should be evaluated by a doctor.
Dr. Duani says cool compression is the best form of treatment to relieve the pain. Other treatment options include using Aloe, Bacitracin Antibiotic Ointment and over-the-counter pain medications.
Burns can be prevented in the summer by taking precautions when cooking/grilling over an open flame, along with keeping children away from utensils and hot cooking surfaces.
As a friendly health reminder, Dr. Duani suggests people have their tetanus shot updated every five to ten years.
