From red, achy skin to deciding how much beauty is worth, What's Going Around tells you everything you need to know about common illnesses passing through Central Virginia this week.

This week we're checking in with Dr. Richard Muller at Buckingham Family Medicine. Believe it or not, he says skin irritations from sunburn is what's going around.

Symptoms include red, inflamed, achy and painful sun-exposed skin. Dr. Muller says light-skinner people are more susceptible to burning but everyone is at risk. The worst of the pain and irritation typically lasts two or three days.

Dr. Muller says physicians can offer sympathy and not much more in the way of treatment. The key is to apply more SPF sunblock next time you're in the sun. A high-SPF lip balm can also help prevent sun blisters.

Not only are we keeping track of common illnesses, we're also staying on top of important reminders. Dr. Muller says tanning beds do not protect you from sun damage. In fact, they have been added to the list of known carcinogens, similar in effect to arsenic and tobacco.

Dr. Muller is also encouraging everyone to be up to date on infant shots and to not forget about spring and summer camp child physicals.
