What you eat could be making you sick. Dr. Kathy Phan of Greene Family Medicine says she's seeing a lot of cases of food poisoning.
Symptoms of food poisoning include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea and fever. Symptoms generally start within one week of food exposure and tend to impact people with weakened immune systems.
Dr. Phan says people are considered contagious until vomiting and diarrhea have resolved.
Food poisoning generally improves on its own with a bland diet, water hydration and rest. However, patients should seek medical attention if there is fever, severe abdominal pain, inability to eat or drink or bloody diarrhea.
Dr. Phan says there are several things you can do to prevent food poisoning. She says you shouldn’t drink unpasteurized milk, always wash hands, knives and cutting boards after handling uncooked food to avoid cross contamination.
You should also refrigerate foods properly and refrain from leaving thoroughly cooked foods out on counters for more than two hours.
