Doctors in Central Virginia are noticing an increase in the number of people being treated for anxiety and stress.
Dr. Bill Murray from Forest Lakes Family Medicine says common signs of stress include irritability, poor sleep, heart palpitations, overeating and substance abuse. People going through major life changes are more likely to be impacted.
Stress can last for a couple hours to a couple years. According to Dr. Murray, the best way to treat the condition is to avoid stress triggers or by planning a healthy response when you feel stressed.
Counseling from a doctor or a trusted friend or family member is another good option. Doctors also have the ability to prescribe medication.
There are several ways you can prevent anxiety and stress. The best option is to get between six and eight hours of sleep a night. Also, exercise is a great way to re-energize your mind, body and spirit.
Dr. Murray says it's also a good idea to simplify your life. He suggests people prioritize their time and focus on something that's most important to them.
