Whether it's aches and pains or something contagious, we're keeping you informed about illnesses passing through our area.
Dr. Brooke Bostic of Greene Family Medicine says the common cold is what's going around this week. Symptoms include runny nose, headache, body aches, congestion and cough.
A cold typically lasts about 7-10 days.
When it comes to treating a cold, different symptoms require different treatments. For a cough Dr. Bostic suggests taking Robitussin. If you have a runny nose you may want to try antihistamines or decongestants. For aches the doctor recommends ibuprofen or acetaminophen. When clearing up nasal congestion, the doctor says decongestants or nasal spray work best.
Preventing the common cold is easy. Dr. Bostic recommends washing your hands frequently and drinking plenty of fluids.
Dr Bostic is also reminding people to read dosing instructions carefully to avoid an overdose. Also, he's encouraging parents of children under the age of three to consult with their primary care provider before giving cold medications to their children.
