What's Going Around - Colds

September 19, 2011

Cold and flu season is right around the corner, and a Greene County doctor is already reporting an increase in the number of people who have cold symptoms.

Dr. Brooke Bostic of Greene Family Medicine said patients with colds have been filling his office.

Symptoms include a runny nose, headache, body aches, congestion and cough. A cold typically lasts about seven to ten days.

Treating a cold can be tricky. You're only able to treat the symptoms. Dr. Bostic suggests using Mucinex, Robitussin or cough syrup to treat your cough. If you have a runny nose, try using antihistamines or decongestants. And If you have a headache and body ache, he recommends Ibprofen or acetaminophen.

The best way to prevent a cold is to drink plenty of fluids and wash your hands.

In addition to paying close attention to the dosing instructions on your medicine bottle, Dr. Bostic is encouraging everyone to get a flu shot.
