What's Going Around: Sinus Infections

April 2, 2012

If you have pressure in the forehead or nasal congestion, it may be more than just your allergies. Doctor David Mahoney of the Charlottesville Wellness Center says sinus infections are what's going around central Virginia this week.

Symptoms of a sinus infection include pain or pressure in the forehead, headache, fever, nasal congestion, reduced sense of smell and taste, cough, bad breath and toothaches. Sinus infections typically last at least seven to ten days.

While most cases resolve without treatment, Dr. Mahoney says there are a few things you can do to treat sinus infections. He suggests Tylenol and ibuprofen for pain, nasal sprays like Flonase or Nasonex and antibiotics for adults whose symptoms last at least seven days.

The best way to prevent sinus infections is with regular hand washing, not smoking and controlling allergies. Dr. Mahoney also recommends sipping hot liquids and drinking plenty of fluids.

In this week's health tip, Dr. Mahoney is reminding people to check their skin for ticks during this time of year. He says this can go a long way to prevent Lyme disease.
