Dr. Laura Howard of Palmyra Medical Associates says strep throat is going around this week.
Symptoms include post nasal drip, low-grade fever, nausea, body aches, malaise and other cold-like symptoms. Dr. Howard says the symptoms typically last seven to ten days.
Treatment depends on the cause, which can be strep throat, flu or any other type of virus. Dr. Howard suggests visiting your primary care physician because he or she can determine the cause and provide the best kind of treatment.
Dr. Howard tells CBS19 the best way to prevent a sore throat is to avoid people who are sick and wash your hands. Also, to protect others for possible infection, you shouldn't go to work or school if you have a fever.
Dr. Howard is also encouraging people with strep throat to seek treatment due to the risk of rheumatic fever, an
inflammatory disease that can occur following strep that can affect the heart, joints, skin and brain.
