Charlottesville City Council Approves New Stop Light Technology

The Charlottesville City Council approved new traffic technology for Route 29 Monday night.

In a 4-2 vote, the council approved the new high tech traffic signals on portions of the busy road. Supporters say it will make the road safer, and help traffic move through faster.

"It's really an interactive system that measures how many people are on the side streets and how many people are coming in and how many from the last light. Pretty high tech methods to keep traffic moving and to make sure people are able to turn out of side streets when there is a natural opening rather than stopping every once in awhile so they can come out," said councilor Kristin Szakos.

Albemarle County is in the process of implementing the same technology for the county portion of Route 29.
