Authorities confirm they have found the car belonging to missing Nelson County teen Alexis Murphy in Albemarle County.

Newsplex media partner Blue Ridge Life Magazine was first to report the white 2003 Nissan Maxima with the license plate number WYN3706 was located Tuesday in the parking lot of the Carmike Six movie theater off of Gardens Boulevard near Albemarle Square Shopping Center.

The Newsplex's Rachel Ryan was the first reporter on the scene and spoke with the young man who alerted police to the vehicle. He says he is friends with the Murphy family and found the car around 8 p.m. on Tuesday. He says he does not know how long it has been parked at the theater.

Investigators waited for a police dog to check the vehicle before they began their search.

Around 10:30 p.m., K-9 dogs picked up a scent at the car leading authorities through the parking lot and toward nearby Arden Place Luxury Apartments. K-9 units searched the clubhouse of the apartment complex.

Employees of the Carmike Six say they do not recall seeing Murphy at the theater over the weekend.

The theater does not have an outdoor security camera, but Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks says officials will return Wednesday morning to try to locate video surveillance from surrounding businesses.

Around 11:30 p.m., the vehicle was towed from the parking lot. Just before midnight, Sheriff Brooks said investigators were leaving for the night and would resume the search Wednesday morning.

Sheriff Brooks said he was "a little surprised" the car was found in Albemarle County.

The investigation into Murphy's disappearance began on Monday. Since then, state police and the FBI have joined the search.
