The family of a Pennsylvania man killed in the September 16th mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard has created a scholarship in his honor.
The annual college scholarship honoring Gerald Read will go to an Eagle Scout who graduates from Clearfield Area High School, which is located about 80 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
Read became an Eagle Scout in September 1973.
He was 58-years-old and lived in Alexandria, Va. when he was one of 12 people killed by a contractor who was then fatally shot by police.
Read's family says witnesses told authorities he pushed a co-worker away from the gunfire, but was fatally wounded in the process.
The scholarship will be worth $1,000 when it's offered the first time next year. Family members have told media outlets that they hope donations will increase the scholarship fund.
