Poll: Hurt with a Substantial Lead in the 5th District

September 2, 2010

A new 5th District poll from SurveyUSA has State Senator Robert Hurt (R) leading incumbent Tom Perriello (D) by almost 30 points, 61 percent to 35 percent. Independent candidate Jeff Clark only had 2 percent of the vote, and another 2 percent of voters were undecided.

The poll was conducted on 800 registered voters from Virginia's 5th Congressional District interviewed by SurveyUSA between August 31 and September 1.

Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released six weeks ago, little has changed; Hurt is up a nominal 3 points; Perriello is flat.

Perriello, who defeated 6-term Republican Virgil Goode by 727 votes in 2008, today is above 50% only among blacks, Democrats, moderates, liberals, those with unfavorable opinions of the Tea Party movement, and pro-choice voters.
