McCain Won't Speak Of Running Mate

February 8, 2008

(AP) John McCain may be on the verge of getting the GOP presidential nomination but he's not ready to talk about running mates, not specifics, anyway.

He does say, though, that he sees no reason that he has to pick someone from a different region. McCain says he thinks regionally
balanced tickets may be a thing of the past.

Speaking to reporters today in Norfolk, Virginia, McCain pointed to the Clinton-Gore ticket as proof that both candidates can come from the same region. It was the first all-Southern ticket.

McCain says the main principle in choosing a running mate is whether that person shares his values and priorities. He also said that in discussing a running mate, he didn't want to suggest that Mike Huckabee is out of the race for the presidential nomination. McCain said that would be "inappropriate and unrealistic."

McCain spoke a day after a conciliatory speech to conservatives, many of whom distrust him. He acknowledged today that there's still "a lot of work to do to unite the party."
