Democratic National Convention
The Democratic National Convention will be held in Denver, Colorado, on August 25-28, 2008 and select the Party's candidates for President and Vice President of the United States.
Virginia will elect 85 National Delegates and 14 Alternates. Virginia's 11 Congressional Districts will elect a total of 54 National Delegates and 11 Alternates. The remaining 31 Delegates and 3 Alternates will be chosen at the State Convention. Another 18 National Delegates are Party Leader and Elected Officials who are "automatic" delegates.
The February 12, 2008 Primary
A primary will be held on February 12, 2008 and the primary vote will be used to allocate delegates to the National Convention ("National Delegates") among the different Democratic candidates. Any voter can participate in the primary.
April 2008 Caucuses
In April 2008, cities and counties across the Commonwealth will hold caucuses that will select "State Delegates" to Congressional District Conventions and a State Convention. The State Delegates will also be allocated among the Democratic Candidates in proportion to the percentage of their vote in the primary. The State Delegates will then elect the National Delegates.
Congressional District Conventions and Virginia State Convention
The Congressional District Conventions in May 2008 and the State Convention on June 124, 2008 will elect the National Delegates.
The process is open to all members of the Democratic Party regardless of race, sex, age, color, creed, national origin, religion, ethnic identity, sexual orientation, economic status or physical disability. The Party also has an active outreach program to encourage full participation by all Democrats.
