Radio Host Apologizes after Calling Candidate 'Chickenhawk,' 'Dupe'

August 10, 2012

A local radio host has apologized to congressional candidate John Douglass and other veterans who he says may have been offended after a tangent on his radio show last week.

WINA's Rob Schilling apologized on Friday's show for comments he says may have been misunderstood. Last week, Schilling called Douglass, a Democrat and retired brigadier general, a "chickenhawk" and "dupe."

"He'll fight for us, the chickenhawk who's too scared to come on the Schilling Show, a brigadier general. Yeah, he's afraid," Schilling said on his Aug. 2 show. "And the reason he's afraid -- and maybe he's a very nice guy, I don't know, I've never met him personally -- but he's a dupe. And he stands for absolutely nothing."

Schilling went on to call Douglass a "crook." The comments began when Schilling made the argument that a number of Democratic veterans are running for Congress in Virginia while trying to appear more conservative to gain more votes.

Veterans who support Douglass are calling on incumbent Robert Hurt, a Republican, to denounce Schilling's statements even though the congressman had nothing to do with the comments and did not appear on the show on that date.

"We agree with others who have spoken out and hope that our opponent and the radio station will take appropriate action," Douglass spokesman Chase Winder said in a statement. "Future appearances on Schilling's show will only serve to condone his continued attacks."

The Hurt campaign also responded to the controversy.

"Robert has the highest respect for every person who has served and who currently serves in our armed forces. Robert's record in the United States Congress clearly shows this support for these brave men and women," the statement from the campaign reads. "While journalists and outside groups may be entitled to their own views, they do not speak for Robert or our campaign."

Schilling addressed his prior comments on Friday's show, saying he apologizes to Douglass and other veterans who may have been offended.
