Republican presumptive nominee John McCain repeated his request for a gas tax holiday on Wednesday.
McCain spent the day campaigning in Pennsylvania. In his speeches he said that oil companies and the government should give the average American a break amidst increasingly high energy costs.
Critics say cutting the price will only increase demand, which would lead to high gas prices once again.
Barack Obama has called the idea a "gimmick".
