Va. Company Says Campaign Contributions Violated Federal Election Law

July 3, 2008

Transurban, a U.S. subsidary of Australian toll road developer Transurban Group, is asking candidates in Virginia who received contributions from it to return the money.

The company says their donations violated federal election law. Federal law bars contributions from foreign companies and foreign nationals.

Transurban officials say the company contributed $172,000 to 90 campaigns in Virginia over the past three years, to both Democrats and Republicans. Recipients included Governor Tim Kaine and dozens of state senators and delegates.

Transurban Executive Vice President Michael Kulper says the company made an honest mistake.

Kulper says the donations will be given to a program which provides help to abused and neglected children in court.
