(AP) - Virginia's largest police organization has endorsed Democrat Mark Warner for the U.S. Senate.
Warner is opposed by another former governor, Republican Jim Gilmore, in November's election.
According to Warner's campaign, this marks the first time the Virginia Fraternal Order of Police has endorsed a Democrat for statewide office in a federal election since the organization began making endorsements in 1985.
The organization credited Warner with steering Virginia through difficult financial times without jeopardizing public safety.
Warner also picked up the endorsement of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
