Latest AP Poll: McCain Takes a Slim Lead over Obama

September 12, 2008

WASHINGTON (AP) - An Associated Press-GfK Poll shows that John
McCain has a slim lead over Barack Obama in the presidential race.

48% of those surveyed say they are voting for McCain, and 44% say they favor Obama.

Obama tried to tie his Republican rival to the deeply unpopular President Bush. But the poll shows McCain is having some success in avoiding that, with half saying they believe the Arizona senator would chart a different path from Bush.

There are some signs of hope for Obama. The Illinois senator has an 18-percentage-point lead among voters who look more to a candidate's values and views than experience. Slightly more of Obama's supporters than McCain's say they will definitely vote for their candidate.

The poll results have a margin of error of +/- 3.4%.
