Thursday's debate before an elite group of business titans in Fairfax County could shake up this year's Senate race if the forum's recent trend holds.
Former Governors Jim Gilmore, a Republican, and Mark Warner, a Democrat, debate a second time before a Chamber of Commerce luncheon in McLean. Warner now dominates the race.
But this debate has been a trap for favorites the past two statewide races.
In 2005, moderator Tim Russert burned Republican gubernatorial candidate Jerry Kilgore as he dodged a question about abortion.
A year later, Republican Senator George Allen stumbled badly in responding to a question about his mother's Jewish ancestry.
Both Republicans lost.
