Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden did not make his planned campaign stops in Virginia on Sunday.

The Obama-Biden campaign canceled Biden's scheduled stops in Virginia Sunday, as well as scheduled campaign appearances Monday and Tuesday, due to the death of his mother-in-law, Bonny Jean Jacobs.

Biden spokesman David Wade said Jacobs, the mother of Biden's wife, Jill, died Sunday after a long illness. Jacobs was 78 and lived in Willow Grove, Pa. Wade described her as a "homemaker and avid gardener with a lifelong love of reading."

"We appreciate everyone's respect for the family's privacy during this difficult time," Wade said.

Barack Obama's running mate was scheduled to speak at community gatherings on the economy. Obama made a stop in Newport News on Saturday.
