Protesters Rally Against Afghanistan War Outside Perriello's Office

June 16, 2010

Protesters gathered outside the office of U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello Wednesday afternoon to voice disapproval of the war in Afghanistan.

They called it a "brown bag vigil." Organizers of the protest said they don't want members of Congress to vote for an additional $33.5 billion to pay for the Afghanistan war.

"We think there are better things that could be done with that money, that we could have jobs investment, green energy investment, schools. We have teachers being laid off," protest organizer David Swanson said. "We could do useful things with that money, rather than escalating a war that even the supporters of the war think is hopeless at this point.

The monthly vigils are part of a national movement. Similar events were planned in more than 100 congressional districts.
