Sen. Chuck Colgan knew he was going to make his Democratic Senate colleagues angry with his decisive vote to at long last pass Virginia's new budget.
In an Associated Press interview, the 85-year-old senator from Prince William says it bothered him to "step outside my circle" on the pivotal April 18 vote.
But he felt he had erred badly a day earlier voting against the budget, possibly triggering a fiscal crisis that threatened to shut state operations and projects if not resolved soon.
He called it "a very rough 24 hours" of brow-beating by both sides, and said he privately resolved to reverse his vote if he got the chance. The longest-serving state senator in Virginia history said the pressure on him was the worst in his 37 sessions.
