All 11 U.S. House Members in Va. Re-elected

November 6, 2012

Virginia's U.S. House incumbents have all won re-election, including Robert Hurt (R) in the 5th District, Eric Cantor (R) in the 7th District, and Bob Goodlatte (R) in the 6th District.

Results of Tuesday's election leave Republicans with an 8-3 advantage over Democrats in the state's House of Representatives delegation.

With 98% of precincts reporting in the 5th District, Hurt holds a 55-43 lead over Gen. John Douglass. The Democratic challenger has already conceded the race.

With 91% of precincts reporting in the 7th District, Cantor holds a 57-42 lead over Democratic challenger E. Wayne Powell.

Finally, with 84% of precincts reporting in the 6th District, Goodlatte holds a 65-34 lead over Democratic challenger Andy Schmookler.

The sweep by incumbents stands in stark contrast to the last two congressional elections in Virginia. In 2008, Democrats rode Barack Obama's coattails to pick up three seats and gain a one-seat edge. In the midterm election two years later, Republicans gained three seats to re-establish their 8-3 advantage.

In Tuesday's most closely watched races, Republican Rep. Scott Rigell turned back Democrat Paul Hirschbiel Jr. in the Hampton Roads 2nd District and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor beat Democrat Wayne Powell in the 7th District, which includes the Richmond area.
