Challenger to Seek Recount in Nelson Sheriff's Race

November 9, 2011

Nelson County Sheriff challenger Mac Bridgwater, who lost to incumbent David Brooks by nine votes, will seek a recount, according to a report by Nelson County Life.

Bridgwater, the Republican candidate, received 2,597 votes (46.4%) compared to 2,606 votes (46.6%) for Brooks, the Democratic candidate.

“Someone’s got to win and someone’s got to lose. At this point, we’re trying to find out who won,” Bridgwater said in a phone interview with Nelson County Life Wednesday morning.

Bridgwater has yet to concede the race, and the razor-thin margin between the two allows for a recount under state law (recounts are legal as long as candidates are separated by less than one percent of votes).

Sheriff Brooks says he stands by the results but adds that his opponent is well within his rights to request a recount.

Nelson County Election Registrar Jackie Britt told Nelson County Life once the election is certified, which must be done within three days, there will be a ten-day waiting period before Bridgwater can formally request a recount.
