Virginia 5th District Congressman Robert Hurt will have some competition for this year's midterm election.

Lawrence Gaughan announced Tuesday he will seek the Democratic nomination for the state’s 5th District seat.

Gaughan, a Charlottesville native, says he is running because he believes Congressman Hurt is out of touch with the concerns of Virginians.

The Democratic challenger wants to increase funding for education, supports tax incentives to bring jobs to the district, and “supports measures that will ensure Virginians be paid an honest day’s wage for an honest day’s work.”

Gaughan will kick off his campaign in Richmond and Charlottesville on Saturday, March 15.
