Local Democrats served up chicken and pork with a side of politics at the 24th-annual Albemarle County Democratic Barbecue.
Hundreds showed up to the annual event at the Lower Sherwood Llama Farm. The event's purpose was to boost morale and officially kick off the campaign season.
The barbecue also serves as the group's annual fundraiser.
Political leaders say they are confident in the Democratic candidates and believe they will come out on top in the November elections.
"This is the worst economy we've been in since the Great Depression. The Great Depression wasn't solved in four years," said state Sen. Creigh Deeds (D-25th District). "This Great Recession is not going to be solved in four years. It's going to take some time, I'm confident we're coming back."
Democrats say they've noticed a boost in excitement after the Democratic National Convention.
